4043 Aluminium TIG Rods
- Description
4043 Aluminium TIG Rods
4043 aluminium TIG rods (classified as ER4043) are silicon-alloyed filler metals designed for TIG (GTAW) welding of aluminium-silicon alloys and general-purpose aluminium fabrication. Containing approximately 5% silicon, 4043 rods are widely used due to their excellent weldability, low cracking tendency, and smooth weld appearance. Supplied in 2.5Kg packs.
Why Use 4043 Aluminium TIG Rods?
Excellent Weldability
The addition of silicon lowers the melting point of the filler metal and improves fluidity in the weld pool. This results in:
Smooth, stable arc characteristics
Easy weld pool control
Good wetting action and fusion
Reduced risk of lack of fusion defects
These properties make 4043 rods particularly suitable for both beginners and experienced welders, especially when welding thin materials or intricate components.
Reduced Risk of Cracking
4043 TIG rods are highly resistant to solidification (hot) cracking, which is a common issue when welding aluminium. The silicon content helps minimise shrinkage stresses during cooling, making them ideal for:
Cast aluminium components
Complex joints with varying thickness
Applications where crack prevention is critical
Ideal for Cast Aluminium and 6xxx Series Alloys
4043 rods are commonly used for welding:
Cast aluminium alloys (e.g. A356, A319)
6xxx series alloys (e.g. 6061, 6063)
They are often the preferred choice when welding castings due to their ability to accommodate impurities and produce sound welds.
Lower Melting Temperature
Compared to fillers like 5356, 4043 rods have a lower melting range, which allows for:
Reduced heat input
Better control on thin materials
Lower distortion in welded components
This is particularly beneficial in precision fabrication and repair work.
Smooth Weld Appearance
4043 produces a bright, smooth, and aesthetically clean weld bead with minimal spatter. This makes it suitable for applications where appearance is important, even without post-weld finishing.
Good General Corrosion Resistance
While not as strong or corrosion-resistant as 5356 in marine environments, 4043 provides adequate resistance for:
General atmospheric exposure
Automotive and structural components
Indoor and non-aggressive environments
Limitations to Consider
Lower tensile strength than 5356
Poorer colour match after anodising (weld appears darker)
Not ideal for high-strength structural or marine applications
