    316 Stainless Steel TIG Rods

316 stainless steel TIG filler rods are filler materials specifically developed for TIG (GTAW) welding of austenitic stainless steels where enhanced corrosion resistance and durability are required. Commonly classified as ER316 or ER316L, these rods are alloyed with molybdenum (typically 2–3%), which significantly improves resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and chemical attack in aggressive environments. Supplied in 5Kg packs.

Why Use 316 Stainless TIG Rods?

    Superior Corrosion Resistance

The addition of molybdenum gives 316 filler rods excellent resistance to corrosion in chloride-rich environments, such as saltwater or coastal conditions. This makes them ideal for applications exposed to:

    • Marine atmospheres and offshore environments

    • Chemical processing equipment

    • Food and pharmaceutical industries

    • Acidic or corrosive service conditions

Compared to 304-grade fillers, 316 rods offer improved protection against pitting corrosion and stress corrosion cracking, especially in environments containing chlorides.

    Compatibility with 316 Base Material

316 TIG rods are primarily used for welding 316 and 316L stainless steels, ensuring metallurgical compatibility and maintaining the corrosion-resistant properties of the parent material. Using a lower-grade filler (e.g. 308) on 316 base metal can reduce corrosion resistance at the weld zone.

    Low Carbon Option (316L)

The ER316L variant has a reduced carbon content, which minimises the risk of carbide precipitation during welding. This helps prevent intergranular corrosion, particularly in applications where the welded component will not be post-weld heat treated.

    High Temperature and Chemical Resistance

316 filler rods maintain strength and oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures, making them suitable for:

    • Heat exchangers

    • Exhaust systems

    • Process piping

    • Pressure vessels

They also perform well in environments involving acids, solvents, and industrial chemicals.

    Smooth TIG Welding Performance

316 TIG rods are designed to provide:

    • Stable arc characteristics

    • Clean weld pool control

    • Low spatter and high weld quality

    • Excellent bead appearance

This makes them suitable for precision TIG welding where appearance and integrity are critical.
