312 Stainless Steel TIG Rods
- Description
312 Stainless Steel TIG Rods
312 stainless steel TIG rods (classified as ER312) are high-alloy filler metals designed for welding dissimilar steels, difficult-to-weld materials, and unknown grades. With a unique chemical composition featuring very high chromium and nickel levels, 312 rods produce a weld deposit with exceptional strength, crack resistance, and versatility, making them a preferred choice for repair, maintenance, and heavy fabrication work. Supplied in 5Kg packs.
Why Use 312 Stainless TIG Rods?
Exceptional Crack Resistance
312 TIG rods are known for their outstanding resistance to hot cracking and weld metal failure. The weld deposit forms a high-strength austenitic-ferritic (duplex-like) structure, which helps absorb stresses caused by:
High restraint joints
Rapid cooling rates
Dissimilar metal expansion differences
This makes 312 one of the most forgiving and reliable fillers for challenging welding conditions.
Ideal for Dissimilar and Unknown Steels
312 rods are widely used for welding:
Stainless steel to carbon or alloy steel
Tool steels and spring steels
High carbon steels
Unknown or mixed material grades
Their high alloy content tolerates dilution from different base metals, maintaining weld integrity where standard fillers (e.g. 308L or 309L) may not perform reliably.
High Strength Weld Deposits
312 filler metal produces welds with very high tensile strength (often exceeding 700 MPa), significantly higher than standard stainless fillers. This makes it suitable for:
Structural repairs
Load-bearing components
Heavy-duty fabrication
The weld metal retains toughness while offering increased resistance to mechanical stress and impact.
Excellent for Repair and Maintenance
Because of its versatility and tolerance to contamination, 312 TIG rods are commonly used in repair environments where material composition or condition may not be fully known. They perform well on:
Worn or damaged components
Hardened or heat-treated steels
Components with limited pre-cleaning
Good Heat and Wear Resistance
312 weld metal offers improved resistance to:
Heat and oxidation
Abrasion and wear
Thermal cycling
This makes it suitable for applications involving elevated temperatures or mechanical wear, such as tooling and industrial equipment.
Stable TIG Welding Characteristics
Despite its high alloy content, 312 rods provide good TIG welding performance:
Smooth, stable arc
Good wetting and fusion
Controlled weld pool
Clean bead appearance
These characteristics allow for precise welding even in demanding applications.
Typical Applications
Dissimilar metal welding (stainless to mild or alloy steel)
Repair of tool steels and high carbon components
Maintenance welding in industrial environments
Hard-facing and wear-resistant overlays
Fabrication where material grade is unknown
