308L Stainless Steel TIG Rods
- Description
308L Stainless Steel TIG Rods
308L stainless steel TIG rods (classified as ER308L) are the most commonly used filler metals for TIG (GTAW) welding of austenitic stainless steels, particularly grades such as 304 and 304L. Designed to deliver excellent corrosion resistance, weld integrity, and ease of use, 308L rods are widely used in fabrication where clean, reliable stainless welds are required. Supplied in 5Kg packs.
Why Use 308L Stainless TIG Rods ?
Ideal for 304 & 304L Stainless Steel
308L TIG rods are specifically matched for welding 304 and 304L stainless steels, ensuring the weld metal maintains similar corrosion resistance and mechanical properties to the parent material. This compatibility makes them the standard choice for general stainless steel fabrication.
Low Carbon Content (L Grade)
The low carbon composition of 308L helps minimise the risk of carbide precipitation during welding. This reduces the likelihood of intergranular corrosion in the heat-affected zone, particularly in applications where post-weld heat treatment is not performed.
Good Corrosion Resistance
308L weld metal provides strong resistance to:
General atmospheric corrosion
Mild chemical exposure
Oxidation at moderate temperatures
While not as resistant as 316-grade fillers in chloride environments, 308L is more than adequate for most indoor, food-grade, and general-purpose stainless applications.
Excellent Weldability
308L rods are designed for smooth and consistent TIG welding performance, offering:
Stable arc characteristics
Easy weld pool control
Clean, spatter-free operation
Attractive, uniform weld beads
This makes them ideal for precision welding and applications where appearance is important.
Versatility in Fabrication
308L TIG rods are suitable for a wide range of stainless steel welding tasks, including:
Thin sheet fabrication
Pipe and tube welding
General workshop fabrication
Maintenance and repair work
They are also commonly used where ease of use and consistent results are priorities.
Good Mechanical Properties
Welds produced with 308L rods offer:
High tensile strength (typically around 500–600 MPa)
Good ductility and toughness
Reliable performance under moderate thermal and mechanical stress
